Wimborne 2005
About The Oyster Girls Past events and gallery

In June 2005, a group of Oyster Girls (and some of their male wannabe "girls") went to Wimborne Folk Festival. We've been several times before, mostly for a single day, but this time we stayed for the weekend, camping.

It was a warm weekend, and a tiring one. We worked very hard, and could barely walk by the evening. This meant that we did not take advantage of the various ceilidhs and concerts on offer, but sat outside our tents, eating, drinking, singing and making merry (though mostly while sitting down.)

This was also the weekend of the Isle of Wight Festival, so we felt that we were very much swimming against the tide, leaving the island and heading to The Mainland, just as everyone else was doing the same journey in the opposite direction.

We survived the markets generally intact. Several pairs of shoes were bought, lots of loud trousers (only occasional elephants, though), and a hat or two. However, most of us showed great restraint. We even managed to get a whole group of female Morris dancers through a street market and out the other side on time to their dance spot. Wow!

Anyway, here are some pics...

Here is one of our Oyster Boys, who hopes that if he sews some lovely frilly bloomers, he will be allowed to be come a girlie.
Dancing at Crown Mead

Just to prove that we did actually dance during the weekend, not just drink and sing... The banner proves that it really is us. Our musicians (who had had to come over a day later than the rest of us) arrived about two minutes before we were due to dance, much to our relief.
Dancing in the High Street

I was trying to find a picture to show just how crowded the streets were, but all this picture shows is that all the crowds scattered as soon as we started to dance. Oh well...
