Hastings 2004
About The Oyster Girls Past events and gallery

The Oyster Girls went to Hastings for the Jack-in-the-Green Festival, on May 1st 2004. We have been to Hastings several times over the years, and always enjoy it, especially the procession, with its giants, and its many many drums.

I seem to have about 300 photos from Hastings. However, some of them appear in the "dances" section, and others are pictures of people paddling, singing, or doing other embarrassing things that I suppose I shouldn't put up without asking them.

Instead, we have a very small sample of some of the pictures more suitable for public consumption.

Dancing on the pier

Us dancing on Hastings pier, on the first afternoon, after an early May morning, but before late nights, food and drink. Note the "Hastings Pier" written in the background, as a subtle clue to where we are. If anyone wants proof that we leave the island sometimes, this picture is it. .
Crowds waiting for Jack

Most pictures of Hasting procession end up being like this - the back of lots and lots of heads, and an overwhelming sense of green
us in procession

We had a new processional dance, which was fun. It involved the top couple periodically casting to the bottom, then having to race up underneath the arches made by everyone else. Since everyone else was normally walking briskly at the time, it involved a lot of hectic running, and cries of "wait for us!"

More Hastings processional, taken by our official pack animal and bag carrier, who was walking at the back.
