The Bestival was a festival held in September 2004 on the Isle of Wight. There will be another one in 2005, and presumably it will then become an annual thing. In 2004 it was held at Robin Hill, a "countryside adventure park" on the Isle of Wight. The intention of the Bestival was, if I understand it correctly, to include a little bit of everything. The organisers seemed most keen to have Morris Dancing at the event, and even put us on the programme! We started off by performing in the farmer's market section, next to stalls beer, cider, ice cream etc. Then we performed our Mummers' Play in a raging wind, next to a dark tent with unknown things happening in it. We were then supposed to perform in front of the main stage, in between acts, but we couldn't compete with the sound system, and so ended up performing next to a cash machine van, to some very unexpected - and very enthusiastic! - fans. A very surreal day... I don't actually have any pictures of us dancing, but here are a few of the venue, just to show what it was like. Imagine a group of Morris dancers performing at this! |
